Welcome to September.

I was lucky enough to attend the recent Next Gen Expo in Cairns. It was organised by the Young Chamber of Commerce. I went along expecting to be the only person there above 40.

It was amazing as the numbers of Gen Y, Gen X and baby boomers were almost equally represented. You cannot help but be energised by young people with their energy and willingness to take on all challenges.

The exposure we all have to technology has its blessings but it can affect personal relationships and make it easy to forget that as human beings we are aspiring to very similar needs – a family, good business environment, friends, good health and a personal life value.

Bernard Shaw once remarked that “youth is wasted on the young.” I believe this emphasises the need to share our knowledge and our wisdom; to listen to advice and new ideas; to be open to change and accept the strengths and weaknesses of others.

A strong and equitable community can be built with the fusion of the energy of the young and the wisdom of the older.
