Hello, Can You Hear Me??

Hearing loss ranks with asthma, diabetes and musculoskeletal disease in terms of burden of disability. A news-poll survey conducted on behalf of Australian Hearing found a strong link between hearing loss and depression. Along with depression, hearing loss can cause loneliness, isolation, embarrassment & frustration. Men are more so affected than women, and the risk also increases with age; six in 10 people over the of 60 & seven in 10 people over the of 70 are affected.

Hearing assessments are quick & painless. They involve, visual ear check, hearing test of 3 or 4 frequencies, questions, explanation of results & written information.

There is also a free preliminary hearing check that can be done over the phone using Telscreen 1800 826 500.

The single most common cause of the hearing loss is excessive noise exposure. Farmers are at a high risk, due to constant use of loud machinery. Also, loud music can increase the risk of hearing loss, through such devices as iPod’s & MP3 players, with 60 percent of users having the volume set above the safe levels.

There are hearing devices, being updated all the time, such as hearing aids. Today’s hearing aids use small discreet sophisticated technology & design.

It’s important to get your hearing checked if you feel you are having trouble understanding what people are saying, and to have peace of mind.

Be mindful when speaking to people who have hearing problems, be patient, speak clearly, keep your hands away form your mouth & don’t shout. People often lip read – as a hint.
